Before signing a moving estimate or agreement, use the conversation with the mover as an opportunity to eliminate surprises. A few direct questions can tell you quite a bit about how the move will actually work.
Ask whether the company you are speaking with will transport your belongings itself or is acting as a broker. Find out what services are included in the quoted price, what could result in additional charges, what happens if your inventory changes, and how pickup and delivery timing will be handled. If a deposit is required, ask about the cancellation and refund terms before paying it.
You should also understand what protection is available for your belongings and what the claims process looks like if something is lost or damaged. For interstate moves, verify the company’s USDOT information and make sure the legal business information matches what appears on your estimate and other documents.
Most importantly, don’t sign something you don’t understand just because you’re being told it’s standard paperwork. Ask questions, get important answers in writing, and keep copies of everything you sign. A moving contract is much easier to evaluate before moving day than after a disagreement occurs.
